Wimberley is a charming small town about 35 miles South of Austin, in the Texas Hill Country. Read on for my tips on when to visit, things to do, where to eat, and even where to swim in Wimberley, Texas! 

When to Visit Wimberley

When to visit is definitely determined by the weather in Wimberley and the activity you’d like to enjoy!

  • Spring and Fall are ideal for shopping, eating on a patio, hiking, and walking around town. If it’s late spring or early fall, you may be able to swim too. 
  • Summer is hot, ideal for going swimming and places with A/C. 
  • Winter is hit or miss, but can be good for shopping and strolling.

How to Get to Wimberley

Located South of Austin, getting to Wimberley will definitely take a car or a hired driver. I recommend renting a car to get around as there is not much transit available in the area. You’ll want to be able to drive to locations a few miles apart while visiting. 

From Austin: The drive will take around 1 hour 

Airports: 

  • Austin Bergstrom International Airport – about 50 minutes away
  • San Antonio International Airport – a little over an hour away

Pro Tips: Don’t forget to sign up for Scott’s Cheap Flights (now Going) to get flight deals right in your inbox! You can also search for rental cars at local airports on booking.com! You’ll be able to see all the rental companies compared in one place. 

Where to Swim in Wimberley

Wimberley swimming holes are a bit famous in Texas. Not only can you swim, but you can also hike in these areas. So plan to take a hike and then a dip afterwards! 

Jacob’s Well – An underwater cave swimming hole. Reservations are required. Open from 8:00 – 6:00 pm daily from May – September (no alcohol, glass, or dogs). Check their website for the latest fees. You are able to hike with no reservation. *Water levels at Jacobs Well have become so low this area is now closed to swimming for the foreseeable future – check website**

Blue Hole – A wooded swimming area with rope swings, as well as trails and a basketball court. Reservations are required. Open 8:00 am – Sunset from the end of May to the beginning of September.

The shops in Wimberley are absolutely adorable. There are small boutiques, antique stores, kitchen accessories, plant shops, gift shops, coffee shops, and more. You’ll find a good selection of places to eat in Wimberley, Texas. I’ll list a few of my favorites below! 

Community Pizza & Beer – A go-to for our family. Not only do they have amazing wood fired pizza, they have a great beer selection (a long with other drinks). Los Olivos Market – Part wine bar, part wine and foodie shop, I like this spot. I was here on my birthday and grabbed a charcuterie box (it was delicious) and a glass of Rosé. Take away wines include a large selection of Texas wines, as well as some natural wines. They do also offer beer. 

Social on the Square – Featuring wine and some alternative drinks like a paloma and a margarita, this is a cute spot with a courtyard to hang out in. There is also a small beer menu.  

Casa Vindemia Wine & Beer Patio – A little off the beaten path up 12, I love this wine bar. (And don’t worry, if beer is not your drink of choice, most offer alternatives!)  Where is Dripping Springs? Dripping Springs is located in the Texas Hill Country, about 30 minutes outside of Austin. While wineries start in Dripping and continue all the way into Fredericksburg (about 45 minutes away), the majority of the breweries and distilleries are actually in Dripping!  When to visit Dripping Springs Dripping is really a great place to visit for most months of the year. If you want ideal weather for Dripping Springs breweries, I would visit in the Spring or the Fall. Summer temps really start to rise in late June – August, and a lot of the breweries have the majority of their space outside. Not to say you can’t find AC if you want to!  Where to Stay in Dripping Springs Did you know that Dripping is also a top wedding location in Texas? The good news – that means lots of fun local accommodations in the area. Personally I love using Airbnb. Below are a few other awesome options for you to check out and book!  Hill Country Casitas – A little bit off the beaten path, but offering a private retreat-like feel, these casitas are a fun option. Each casita offers an outdoor patio and hill country views. At least click to take a look at these little cottages! Quintessential Hill Country!  Lucky Arrow Retreat – This is such a unique place to stay in Dripping! Perched on a hilltop next to Bell Springs Winery/Brewery, the location is great. They offer upscale cabins and yurts, and amenities include a pool and an event space.  Click here to browse accommodations in Dripping!  Dripping Springs Breweries Suds Monkey Brewing About: Suds Monkey is the modern version of a local neighborhood bar, except with high-quality brews and pizza. This location features an indoor taproom with tables and a bar, as well as a large beer garden that caters to kids. Their beer selection is pretty wide with typically 10 beers on tap varying from blonde, to IPA, to hefeweizen, and porter. This is a great spot to go hang out all day. Also…I love pizza. 🙂  Tip: The owner often features events like Music Bing on Saturday nights and Wednesday night trivia, an Easter egg hunt in the Spring and more. Most of which are family-friendly. Check their website or social media for details!  Food: Pizza is available for dine-in or take out and the quality is really good. They also have salads, garlic knots, and cheesy bread so there is something for everyone.   Family Friendly: Yes! Playscape out front and kids are welcome in the taproom. Also pet friendly!  Alternative beverages: Yes! They also have wine and seltzer available, as well as sodas and juice boxes.  Location: 12024 US-290, Austin, TX 78737 (Picture is of the old location) Website for more details Vista Brewing About: Technically not in Dripping but in neighboring Driftwood, this taproom and garden has some of the most interesting and delicious beers in the area. They often partner with other breweries and wineries to make unique blends. Their beers cover a large spectrum from IPA, to blonde, to farmhouse ales. They offer a large outdoor beer garden space, and large indoor tables as well. Since this location is closer to the Austin Metro, get there early on a nice day to secure a table.  TIP: Grab your beer from the walk-up outdoor window, it can sometimes have a shorter line than the indoor bar.  Food: Vista offers elevated comfort food that pairs perfectly with its unique beers. They also have an on-site farm where they bee keep and grow fresh food.  Family Friendly: Yes! There is a large play platform with a slide towards the rear of the beer garden.  Alternative Beverages: Yes! With cider, sparkling wine, rose, white and red wine, anyone can find a drink they prefer. Non-alcoholic drinks include root beer, lemonade, sparkling water, and when you need a little pick me up – cold brew coffee.  Location: 13551 Ranch to Market Rd 150, Driftwood, TX 78619 Website for more details Bell Springs Winery & Brewery About: Wait a minute – a two for one location?? That’s right, Bell Springs has long been a winery in Dripping, but added brewing beer in 2019. They now offer wine tasting at one bar, and beer taps at another within the same building. With two covered porches and a good amount of outdoor seating, this is an ideal location to lounge outside. Typically four beers on tap, and last time we had a blonde and an IPA. Their seasonal Oktoberfest beers are amazing and have won awards. TIP: This is one of the most laid back wineries in the Hill Country. So if you like wine (and beer) in a relaxed atmosphere this is the place for you. Sunday is a perfect day here, Friday and Saturday can get busy with winery bus tours.  Food: The food truck on site has great options, and there are happy hour prices on Thursday and Fridays from 3:00 – close.  Family Friendly: Yes! They added a playscape in 2024, there is a dry creek bed that my son loves to check out (within site of outdoor tables). Alternative Beverages: Soda, water or sparkling water.  Location: 3700 Bell Springs Rd, Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Website for more details Acopon About: This brewery is the perfect stop as you stroll the shops on historic Mercer Street in downtown Dripping. Their beers focus on English Pub style brews. You’ll find cask style pours, as well as IPA, hefeweizen, barrel-aged ale, Czech pilsner, and more. Taps rotate so will vary.  Tip: Weeknights (Wednesday & Thursday) are pretty quiet here, so if you want an intimate experience it’s a great time of the week to go.  Food: They often have a food truck on-site, but you may want to check before you go.  Family Friendly: Yes, they have board games inside, and kids are welcome to sit inside or out (it is a small room so do make sure they are courteous). No official kids space.  Alternative Beverages: Yes! They have cider and wine available as well as sodas. My son loves the rootbeer.  Location: 211 W. Mercer St., Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Website for more details 12 Fox Beer Co About: A veteran-owned brewery, 12 Fox is located the furthest off the beaten path. With an outdoor beer garden and a large closed-in porch (with heat and A/C) for the bar and seating, this is a great spot to spend some time. Their beers focus on Belgian and German European styles with a saison, hefeweizen, and Belgian tripel usually on draft.  Tip: Check to see which food truck will be on-site before you get there! They also have a big Oktoberfest celebration yearly, as well as other fun events! Check them out on Instagram (owner posts regularly)  Food: Varies depending on what food truck is parked on-site for the weekend. Regulars include Gummis BBQ, Gourmet Burgers, and Tacos. The taproom also offers an ice cream freezer for treats.  Family Friendly: Yes! Full playscape, and swingset on-site. Adult supervision required.  Alternative Drinks: Yes! Wine and mead on tap, juice for kids, water, and sodas.  Location: 4700 W Fitzhugh Rd, Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Website for more details Going – for cheap flight notifications! I love the atmosphere with a nice open air deck and well manicured beer garden space. They have a varied beer selection, when we visited our selections included an IPA, Saison, and Blonde. Some of my favorite beer in the area.  Tip: They offer a variety of live music on the weekends.  Food: There is a resident food truck on site with Mexican food, to be honest it’s not my favorite bit it does the trick for a quick snack.  Family Friendly: Yes! They have a more natural playscape with a climbing net and slide.  Alternative Drinks: Yes! They have sodas, sweet tea, and non-alcoholic beer, as well as wine and house made hard seltzer that is really good.  Location: 23663 Ranch Road 12, Ghost Note Ln, Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Want more Dripping info? Click to read my full Insider’s Travel Guide to Dripping Springs! Fitzhugh Brewery About: Joining the likes of Treaty Oak and Jester King along Fitzhugh Road, this spot is quite the contender. I’ve visited multiple times now and each time found a different beer that I loved. Hazy IPA, Austrian style beer, saison, stout, and more are part of their rotating taps with ver unique beers. The taproom is stylish with room to sit indoors, a covered porch, and huge beer garden outside as well.  Tip: This place gets busy on the weekend. Arrive early to snag a table.  Food: Full menu of delicious food, which is a major plus. We love their big soft pretzel with queso.  Family Friendly: 100%. The beer garden tables are all placed in a circle around the playground. They also have popsicles, what more can a kid ask for? Dog friendly too! Alternative Drinks: Yes! They have wine and hard seltzer, as well as fountain drinks. (Wine at a brewery can be pricy, but this spot if affordable!)  Address: 15435 Fitzhugh Rd, Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Dripping Springs Breweries – Pro Tips Visiting more than 2 breweries a day would be a bit optimistic. You’ll find that it’s much more enjoyable to relax and stay awhile. I recommend keeping your agenda light.  We are outside the city in the Hill Country, and there can be bugs. I suggest closed-toe shoes especially if red ants tend to like you. They often partner with other breweries and wineries to make unique blends. Their beers cover a large spectrum from IPA, to blonde, to farmhouse ales. They offer a large outdoor beer garden space, and large indoor tables as well. Since this location is closer to the Austin Metro, get there early on a nice day to secure a table. 

TIP: Grab your beer from the walk-up outdoor window, it can sometimes have a shorter line than the indoor bar. 

Food: Vista offers elevated comfort food that pairs perfectly with its unique beers. They also have an on-site farm where they bee keep and grow fresh food. 

Family Friendly: Yes! There is a large play platform with a slide towards the rear of the beer garden. 

Alternative Beverages: Yes! With cider, sparkling wine, rose, white and red wine, anyone can find a drink they prefer. Non-alcoholic drinks include root beer, lemonade, sparkling water, and when you need a little pick me up – cold brew coffee.

Bell Springs Winery & Brewery

Wine & Beer, Bell Springs, Dripping Springs Brewey, Plan to Explore

About: Wait a minute – a two for one location?? That’s right, Bell Springs has long been a winery in Dripping, but added brewing beer in 2019. They now offer wine tasting at one bar, and beer taps at another within the same building. With two covered porches and a good amount of outdoor seating, this is an ideal location to lounge outside. Typically four beers on tap, and last time we had a blonde and an IPA. Their seasonal Oktoberfest beers are amazing and have won awards.

TIP: This is one of the most laid back wineries in the Hill Country. So if you like wine (and beer) in a relaxed atmosphere this is the place for you. Sunday is a perfect day here, Friday and Saturday can get busy with winery bus tours. 

Food: The food truck on site has great options, and there are happy hour prices on Thursday and Fridays from 3:00 – close. 

Family Friendly: Yes! They added a playscape in 2024, there is a dry creek bed that my son loves to check out (within site of outdoor tables).

Alternative Beverages: Soda, water or sparkling water.

About: This brewery is the perfect stop as you stroll the shops on historic Mercer Street in downtown Dripping. Their beers focus on English Pub style brews. You’ll find cask style pours, as well as IPA, hefeweizen, barrel-aged ale, Czech pilsner, and more. Taps rotate so will vary. 

Tip: Weeknights (Wednesday & Thursday) are pretty quiet here, so if you want an intimate experience it’s a great time of the week to go. 

Food: They often have a food truck on-site, but you may want to check before you go. 

Family Friendly: Yes, they have board games inside, and kids are welcome to sit inside or out (it is a small room so do make sure they are courteous). No official kids space. 

Alternative Beverages: Yes! They have cider and wine available as well as sodas. My son loves the rootbeer.

12 Fox Beer Co

About: A veteran-owned brewery, 12 Fox is located the furthest off the beaten path. With an outdoor beer garden and a large closed-in porch (with heat and A/C) for the bar and seating, this is a great spot to spend some time. Their beers focus on Belgian and German European styles with a saison, hefeweizen, and Belgian tripel usually on draft. 

Tip: Check to see which food truck will be on-site before you get there! They also have a big Oktoberfest celebration yearly, as well as other fun events! Check them out on Instagram (owner posts regularly) 

Food: Varies depending on what food truck is parked on-site for the weekend. Regulars include Gummis BBQ, Gourmet Burgers, and Tacos. The taproom also offers an ice cream freezer for treats. 

Family Friendly: Yes! Full playscape, and swingset on-site. Adult supervision required. 

Alternative Drinks: Yes! Wine and mead on tap, juice for kids, water, and sodas.

About: New to the brewery scene in 2021, Ghost Note is an awesome addition to the beer scene. I love the atmosphere with a nice open air deck and well manicured beer garden space. They have a varied beer selection, when we visited our selections included an IPA, Saison, and Blonde. Some of my favorite beer in the area. 

Tip: They offer a variety of live music on the weekends. 

Food: There is a resident food truck on site with Mexican food, to be honest it’s not my favorite bit it does the trick for a quick snack. 

Family Friendly: Yes! They have a more natural playscape with a climbing net and slide. 

Alternative Drinks: Yes! They have sodas, sweet tea, and non-alcoholic beer, as well as wine and house made hard seltzer that is really good.

About: Joining the likes of Treaty Oak and Jester King along Fitzhugh Road, this spot is quite the contender. I’ve visited multiple times now and each time found a different beer that I loved. Hazy IPA, Austrian style beer, saison, stout, and more are part of their rotating taps with ver unique beers. The taproom is stylish with room to sit indoors, a covered porch, and huge beer garden outside as well. 

Tip: This place gets busy on the weekend. Arrive early to snag a table. 

Food: Full menu of delicious food, which is a major plus. We love their big soft pretzel with queso. 

Family Friendly: 100%. The beer garden tables are all placed in a circle around the playground. They also have popsicles, what more can a kid ask for? Dog friendly too!

Alternative Drinks: Yes! They have wine and hard seltzer, as well as fountain drinks. (Wine at a brewery can be pricy, but this spot if affordable!)

Dripping Springs Breweries - Pro Tips

  • Visiting more than 2 breweries a day would be a bit optimistic. You’ll find that it’s much more enjoyable to relax and stay awhile. I recommend keeping your agenda light. 
  • We are outside the city in the Hill Country, and there can be bugs. I suggest closed-toe shoes especially if red ants tend to like you. Also, bug spray your ankles to be safe especially in late spring and summer.

First, a few details on weather and when to visit.   Johnson City, Texas Weather The weather in Johnson City is very similar to Austin but is typically a few degrees cooler.  The best times to visit this area are definitely spring and fall when temperatures are somewhere between 60 to 80 degrees (F). Winter can be hit or miss, but the true cold and occasional (rare) snow tend to happen in January or February. I really don’t recommend July or August, it’s just too hot to be outdoors unless you are in some type of water swimming or only want to stay indoors.  How To Get To Johnson City Flying: You will fly into either Austin Bergstrom Airport or San Antonio’s Airport, both of which are about an hour away. You will need a car, unless you want to pay a large fee to hire a driver. They also have a number of natural wines that are really great, and a few light snacks.  Details: Open Thursday – Saturday from 3-9 pm. Sunday 1-6 pm.  Address: 109 N Nugent Ave, Johnson City, TX 78636  The Parlour Wine Bar, featuring wine from Southold Farm & Cellar Farmhouse Vineyards Marketplace – A tasting room for a winery based in the high plains of Texas. I like this location for their outdoor patio options, where we sat on rocking chairs watching the world go by. You can even taste wine in their renovated airstream trailer out front!  Details: Walk-ins welcome, but expect it to be busy on the weekend. Tasting costs $20/person.  Address: 402 E Main St, Johnson City, TX 78636 Farmhouse Vineyard Marketplace 2. LBJ’s Childhood Home Johnson City was settled by Lyndon B Johnson’s family and he was born not far from here. Most people also visit the state park named for him just down Highway 290 in Stonewall which has a living history farm, trails, and bison. His ranch is also near the state park.  LBJ’s boyhood home is located in the city center of Johnson City and Park Rangers offer free tours on the hour. Adjacent to the home is a visitors center and parkland with a trail that features several historic buildings.  Details: Hours are from 9:00 – 11:30 am, and 1:00 – 4:30 pm. You’ll find the highest concentration in Dripping Springs, but Johnson City has a few spots to try out too.  Pecan Street Brewing – This location is a restaurant and brewery in one. They have a full menu as well as wine and other beverages. We visited during Christmas time when they fully decorate and it’s quite the festive atmosphere.  Details: Open daily from 11 am – 8 pm on weekdays and 11 am – 9 pm on the weekend. During the holidays when the PEC lights (see below) are lit, there can be a really long wait.  Address: 106 E Pecan Dr, Johnson City, TX 78636 Reck ‘Em Right Brewing – If you need a beverage after touring LBJ’s boyhood home, Reck ‘Em Right is across the street! Their craft beer selection is small but changes often and uses a unique yeast called Kveik. We really liked most of the beers we tried, especially their Saison! Johnson City has retained the laid-back and quaint small town feel.  There is not as much variety and selection as Austin or Fredericksburg, but sometimes that makes a visit so much easier. Don’t you think?  Outdoors Bonus: Pedernales Falls State Park Head East from Johnson City on 2766/Robinson Road and in 10 minutes you’ll arrive at Pedernales Falls State Park. If you are looking for hiking in Texas, this is your spot.  Hiking trails vary from easy to advanced, and short to long. The falls are a beautiful area where the water has weaved its way around the rock, and there are other scenic vistas throughout the park. You’ll also find an area to swim and camping spots for both tents and RVs.  Details: You’ll need to make a reservation in advance even if you just need a day pass. I love seeing alternate parts of a town and discovering hidden gems. Oh and don’t forget food, lots of good food.  Read on to find out the top interesting spots off the beaten path in central San Antonio. Where to Stay in San Antonio, Texas Airbnb is the way to go for an alternate place to stay! There are lots of great hotels on the Riverwalk, but an Airbnb lets you walk around a neighborhood and really feel the vibe “off the beaten path.”  Tobin Hill is a great choice for central San Antonio, still close to everything but not in the tourist center. You can walk to several areas from here including St Mary’s Strip, North Riverwalk Trail, and The Pearl.  There are also a lot of hotels closer to the Riverwalk itself. If a hotel is more your speed, they have great deals on stays in San Antonio!  San Antonio Weather & When to Visit San Antonio is one of those cities you can visit almost year-round. Winters are mild (usually), with Spring and Fall really being an ideal time for mid-range temperatures.  Summer is hot. I would not visit in July or August unless you plan to do most things indoors or in some type of water.  Pro tip: I constantly use weatherspark.com to check the weather, typical rainfall, even humidity of a city in a particular month. It helps me decide when I want to visit throughout the year!  The Historic Pearl Brewery & District The Pearl is such a fun spot. Restaurants, shops, farmer’s market on the weekend, and drinks while you wander around. I mean what more can you ask for?  Beautiful historic buildings make up this area, all from when this was a working brewery. The Pearl Brewery operated and made beer from 1883 – 2001. It’s fun to walk around and look into the old buildings to see what was retained. Great places to see some of the history are inside Hotel Emma, Southerleigh Kitchen and Brewing, and Cured.  Pearl Brewery – Where to Eat & Drink I’m not sure if you can really go wrong with food in this complex. It’s known as a culinary hot spot, and there are so many places I want to go back to try.  Bottling Dept Food Hall – A great spot for to-go food to eat on the lawn or at tables out front. Food is affordable and delicious. Options range from pizza to ramen to Caribbean food. We opted for the latter at Mi Roti and loved their Roti wrap. Another spot we tried wass Chiliquil for breakfast tacos. Full take-away bar on-site.  Southerleigh Kitchen & Brewing – Get craft beer from this restaurant and stay for the food. We have only had appetizers here, but they were good. You can also purchase beer from a stand right outside and wander around with it. Yes, please.  Down on Grayson – Technically not within the Pearl but right next door, we really loved their outdoor patio. The food and cocktails were outstanding, and the price much more affordable than some of the Pearl locations.  Supper – This upscale restaurant is a perfect spot for a celebration, birthday, or just a fancy night out. Their small menu has items that are all done well, and they offer a superb wine list.  Lick Ice Cream – I’m not sure how we never managed to go here in Austin, where Lick was founded, but we finally visited! I mean come on.  Down on Grayson Pearl Brewery – Things To Do Besides eating, which is really the main thing to do here, there are a few other fun options.  Pearl Farmer’s Market – Every Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, local vendors set up shop all along the walkways. On Saturday the market features produce, meat, hummus, coffee, and more. Sunday lends more towards local artisans for shopping. We tried empanadas that were fantastic!  Lounge on the lawn – Right outside the Bottling Depot is a big lawn for lounging and playing. Sit on the turf or grab a table on the perimeter and hang out with a cold beverage. Also great for people watching. We felt like we were back in a city center in Europe! San Antonio Japanese Tea Garden Within Brackenridge Park, North of downtown is the Japanese Tea Garden. Opened in an abandoned limestone rock quarry in 1942, this has become a beloved garden in San Antonio.  Normally lush, green, and beautiful, it was a bit brown when we visited due to icy weather the week before. A fun place to explore, winding pathways lead to bridges that take you over green lagoons.  Notes: FREE. We spent about half an hour to 45 minutes exploring. Good shoes are necessary, and if you have a kid do not even consider bringing a stroller.  St. Mary’s Strip St. Mary’s is kind of like the little sister to the Riverwalk with bars and restaurants (with much better quality food) lining the street. I’ve been to San Antonio, actually multiple times before, since it’s so close to Austin.  I’m guessing when you think of San Antonio, Texas you think of two things  – The Riverwalk and The Alamo. 

While those are great (albeit touristy) spots, we had visited both before and wanted to change things up. I love seeing alternate parts of a town and discovering hidden gems. Oh and don’t forget food, lots of good food. 

Read on to find out the top interesting spots off the beaten path in central San Antonio.

Where to Stay in San Antonio, Texas

Airbnb is the way to go for an alternate place to stay! There are lots of great hotels on the Riverwalk, but an Airbnb lets you walk around a neighborhood and really feel the vibe “off the beaten path.” 

Tobin Hill is a great choice for central San Antonio, still close to everything but not in the tourist center. You can walk to several areas from here including St Mary’s Strip, North Riverwalk Trail, and The Pearl. 

There are also a lot of hotels closer to the Riverwalk itself. You can find historic locations, a “haunted hotel” (The Menger), and modern spots as well. Click here to book!

San Antonio Weather & When to Visit

San Antonio is one of those cities you can visit almost year-round. Winters are mild (usually), with Spring and Fall really being an ideal time for mid-range temperatures. 

Summer is hot. I would not visit in July or August unless you plan to do most things indoors or in some type of water. 

Pro tip: I constantly use weatherspark.com to check the weather, typical rainfall, even humidity of a city in a particular month. It helps me decide when I want to visit throughout the year! 

The Historic Pearl Brewery & District

The Pearl is such a fun spot. Restaurants, shops, farmer’s market on the weekend, and drinks while you wander around. I mean what more can you ask for? 

Beautiful historic buildings make up this area, all from when this was a working brewery. The Pearl Brewery operated and made beer from 1883 – 2001. It’s fun to walk around and look into the old buildings to see what was retained. Great places to see some of the history are inside Hotel Emma, Southerleigh Kitchen and Brewing, and Cured.

I’m not sure if you can really go wrong with food in this complex. It’s known as a culinary hot spot, and there are so many places I want to go back to try. 

Bottling Dept Food Hall – A great spot for to-go food to eat on the lawn or at tables out front. Food is affordable and delicious. Options range from pizza to ramen to Caribbean food. We opted for the latter at Mi Roti and loved their Roti wrap. Another spot we tried wass Chiliquil for breakfast tacos. Full take-away bar on-site. 

Southerleigh Kitchen & Brewing – Get craft beer from this restaurant and stay for the food. We have only had appetizers here, but they were good. You can also purchase beer from a stand right outside and wander around with it. Yes, please. 

Down on Grayson – Technically not within the Pearl but right next door, we really loved their outdoor patio. The food and cocktails were outstanding, and the price much more affordable than some of the Pearl locations. 

Supper – This upscale restaurant is a perfect spot for a celebration, birthday, or just a fancy night out. Their small menu has items that are all done well, and they offer a superb wine list. 

Lick Ice Cream – I’m not sure how we never managed to go here in Austin, where Lick was founded, but we finally visited! Delicious top ingredient ice cream. I had their cream cheese kolache flavor, and the kiddo had chocolate peanut butter with brownie chunks in it. I mean come on.

Pearl Brewery - Things To Do

Most wineries offer tastings indoors, but I think part of the fun is enjoying a glass outdoors with views of the rolling hills.  Where to Stay in Dripping Springs Did you know that Dripping is also a top wedding location in Texas? The good news – that means lots of fun local accommodations in the area. I love finding unique stays, even in my own backyard. Below are a few other awesome options for you to check out and book!  Hill Country Casitas – A little bit off the beaten path, but offering a private retreat-like feel, these casitas are a fun option. Quintessential Hill Country!  Lucky Arrow Retreat – This is such a unique place to stay in Dripping! Perched on a hilltop next to Bell Springs Winery/Brewery, the location is great. Oh and let me tell you about that cellar tour! Climb down a spiral staircase into a European style cool wine cellar with barrels lining both sides. Tastings, wines by the glass, and bottle are available. They share a lovely outdoor space with Bell Springs that is kid and dog friendly (although the tasting room is not kid friendly).  TIP: Even though they are not “Texas wines” I really think this is a great addition to your tour. It’s nice to switch up the grape varietals and taste something different! All of the staff are super friendly and love to answer your wine questions.  Food: Regular food truck onsite for both wineries. Sunday is a perfect day here, Friday and Saturday can get busy with winery bus tours.  Food: There is a food truck on-site outside. Dripping Springs is located in the Texas Hill Country, about 30 minutes outside of Austin. Wineries start in Dripping and continue all the way into Fredericksburg (about 45 minutes away). Also about one hour north of San Antonio, and 4 hours south of Dallas for some perspective.

About: All the way from Paso Robles in California, this winery doesn’t grow their grapes on-site, but they do offer some really delicious wine choices that are different from Texas. They tasting room has a section for wine as well as one for beer. With two covered porches and a good amount of outdoor seating, this is an ideal location to lounge outside. Very dog and kid-friendly! 

TIP: This is one of the most laid back wineries in the Hill Country. So if you like wine (and beer) in a relaxed atmosphere this is the place for you. Sunday is a perfect day here, Friday and Saturday can get busy with winery bus tours. 

Food: There is a food truck on-site outside. This would be an ideal location to schedule a tasting around lunchtime so you can also grab food.

Parmeson Wines

About: This is a tasting room for wines that are grown and produced in Sonoma, California. Delicious quality wines and Pinot Noir, but a little on the expensive side compared to other Dripping Springs wineries. I like this as a quick stop for a tasting, especially if you’re working your way down Bell Springs Road. 

Tip: This winery is located on Bell Springs but can be a little hard to find. It’s located down the same drive as the business Carved Stone.

Tip: Solaro is close to a lot of the breweries and distilleries along Fitzhugh Road so this could be part of a winery tour or even a Dripping Springs drink tour. (If you can handle it, haha). Making a tasting reservation is recommended.

Dripping Springs Wineries - Pro Tips

Small town Texas charm, German heritage, and amazing wine are just a few of the reasons why.  This particular trip to Fredericksburg was not a typical one. Usually, we head out there when spring flowers are blooming, or fall is upon us. This time, I surprised my Husband with a one night stay for his Birthday in late February.  We definitely strayed away from our usual agenda of wine tasting, so read on to see what we did on our unique day (Tuesday!) in Fredericksburg, Texas.  No Surprise Here This trip was supposed to be a surprise.  I asked my parents to watch our son overnight, Brandon had the day off, it seemed perfect for a surprise. I found a super cute place to stay with a Japanese soaking tub out front (more on that later), and booked it!  He thought he only had the day off from work, so he kept asking me what we should do for the day because “we didn’t have a lot of time.” When you wake up a toddler, take them to school, and then need to pick them up from school, a day off is really not that long!  Long story short, I finally had to tell him my plan so he could stop worrying and instead get excited about our adventure.  Breakfast in Fredericksburg After dropping off our son at school in the morning, we booked it out to Fredericksburg to make the most of our time.  We made it to the Old German Bakery and picked up a cream cheese and cherry strudel, and a sausage and cheese kolache to go. Fredericksburg, Texas is one of those places I could just keep going back to again and again.

Small town Texas charm, German heritage, and amazing wine are just a few of the reasons why. 

This particular trip to Fredericksburg was not a typical one. Usually, we head out there when spring flowers are blooming, or fall is upon us. This time, I surprised my Husband with a one night stay for his Birthday in late February. 

We definitely strayed away from our usual agenda of wine tasting, so read on to see what we did on our unique day (Tuesday!) in Fredericksburg, Texas. 

No Surprise Here

This trip was supposed to be a surprise. 

I asked my parents to watch our son overnight, Brandon had the day off, it seemed perfect for a surprise. I found a super cute place to stay with a Japanese soaking tub out front (more on that later), and booked it! 

He thought he only had the day off from work, so he kept asking me what we should do for the day because “we didn’t have a lot of time.” When you wake up a toddler, take them to school, and then need to pick them up from school, a day off is really not that long! 

Long story short, I finally had to tell him my plan so he could stop worrying and instead get excited about our adventure.

We made it to the Old German Bakery and picked up a cream cheese and cherry strudel, and a sausage and cheese kolache to go. Decadent and SO good! The sit-down breakfast looked good so we decided to come back the next morning on our way out. 

To keep you from the suspense. the next morning I had a german pancake that was amazing. I feel like it’s a cross between a crepe and a pancake. He had sausage, gravy, and biscuits. Neither of us was disappointed. 🙂

Touring the Texas Hill Country in Style

Fredericksburg Texas Slingshot Rental, Plan to Explore

Renting a slingshot was something I never imagined doing – a small vehicle with no roof in 60-degree weather. 

The slingshot was so much fun to drive around the hill country roads! We saw sites and stopped to look at views we would have never done in a car. There is a trail of historic schoolhouses in the Hill Country we stumbled on – pictured above. 

The owner of Slingshot Rentals, Yann, was super helpful and flexible with timing. He met us in a parking lot to go over how to use the vehicle, safety, and routes to take. 

Unfortunately, the weather in Fredericksburg worsened by the minute while we were out there, and we didn’t get to take full advantage of our time. If this is something you are considering – do it! This is definitely a splurge item, and in a little bit warmer weather it would have been absolutely amazing.

Drinks on Main Street

Most people come to this region for the wineries and they are outstanding. This trip we wanted to do something a little bit different. 

With the temperature dropping outside, so we decided to check out what Main Street had to offer for drinks. We stopped into Elk Store Winery and Distillery for a liquor tasting. They distill whiskey, gin, rum, and moonshine, and also have some delicious cocktails. After living in South Austin for 9+ years the decision to move “out of town” was a tough one for us. But we traded hour-long waitlists at up and coming restaurants for sprawling ranches turned into breweries or wineries, and smaller local places to eat. I think I’ll take it.  People are becoming more and more familiar with the Hill Country as one of the top wine trails in the country. Dripping Springs is the beginning of that trail, but we have so much more than wine!  I recently spent the day treating my town as a visitor and want to share all my travel tips with you below.  How to Get There By Plane – If you are traveling from out of state, Austin Bergstrom International Airport is your best bet. You could also fly into San Antonio as an option. You will need a car to get anywhere. Drive time from ABIA to Dripping Springs is approximately 35 – 45 minutes (depending on traffic). Driving – If you are coming from somewhere in Texas, you’ll want to make your way to 290, the highway that flows through the center of Dripping Springs. From San Antonio you can drive north on I-35 to 290 or take the scenic route up 281 where you’ll hit 290 close to Johnson City.  Pro Tip: Use Going to find cheap flights to anywhere in the US and even abroad! Follow me on Social Media below!  Pinterest Instagram Facebook Seasons and Weather The ideal time to visit Texas and enjoy the outdoors are Spring and Fall. With that said, that’s when everyone prefers to visit. You’ll want to weigh temperature and weather with the cost of lodging during different seasons to decide on when to visit.  Winter: December – February.  Temperatures range from 30 – 60º Fahrenheit. This can really vary and could be worth the chance for the lower cost of lodging during this season. December is your best bet. You might even get to see some Christmas lights.  Spring: March – April. Temps range from 60 – 80º. This time of year is ideal, but expect higher prices and bigger crowds. Both months are equally great in my opinion. You might catch the wildflowers blooming, including bluebonnets, during this season! Summer: May – September. It gets hot in Texas, really hot. Temperatures range from 80 – 100+ degrees. If you want to travel during this time, I would suggest either May when it’s still closer to the 80-degree range and maybe September.  On the plus side, the crowds will be thinner.  Fall: October – November. Temps range from 50 – 80º, with averages in the 70’s. This time of year is also ideal, but can be busy just like Spring. This would be the perfect time to shop for Holiday gifts!  Read More: Tips You Need for Your First RV Rental Trip Where to Stay Although Dripping has fewer accommodation options than further into wine country, you can find some hidden gems in this area.  One of the best way to find an affordable and nice place to stay is Airbnb. Whether you are a solo traveler or a large family, you’ll be able to find a great place.  I did a quick search on their site for a long weekend stay in April, and it gave me over 200 options in all different price ranges.  Feature: Lucky Arrow Retreat On our day trip around our own town, we stopped by this super cool spot, and they so graciously allowed us to wander the entire property and takes pictures.  Located off Bell Springs Road and directly next to Bell Springs Winery, this is a great place to make your basecamp. In fact, that’s their tag line, “Your basecamp for adventure.”  Here’s what they offer:  Luxury cabins and yurts – I mean how fun and unique, am I right?  Private Events and Weddings – There is a hill country view overlook on the property that would be an amazing wedding spot. Event center on the property as well. Beautiful Pool – Complete with a bathhouse to change in right next door. Troopy Tours – You can book their Toyota Land Cruiser Troop Carrier to visit wineries, breweries, restaurants or scenic spots.  Click here for more information and to book a room.  Where to Eat in Dripping Springs Let’s get to the good stuff here. I love to plan travel based around good food.  Dripping is just starting to hit the radar in this area, and I’ll give you my top suggestions for every meal of the day.  (Click on any of the restaurant names below to go directly to their website for hours, menus, etc!)  Breakfast & Coffee Rolling in Thyme and Dough  – Located off 290 just west of downtown. This is the local go-to for fresh breakfast and pastries. They use fresh, local organic ingredients. Not open Sundays.  Crepe Crazy – Also located on 290 west of downtown. All crepes all the time, they do offer some other items as well like sandwiches salads and soups. This place is really tasty, and they support the deaf community. All of the staff who work here are deaf.  Flores Breakfast Taco Shack – Located at the corner of Mighty Tiger and 290. There is usually a line, so come prepared. Run by the owners of Flores Mexican Restaurant. Not open Sundays.  Mazama Coffee – Located on Mercer Street. Our local coffee shop. Good coffee and small snacks if you are feeling like a light breakfast. Lunch Bistro at Texas Hill Country Olive Company – Located on Fitzhugh Road, right at Bell Springs Rd. A small menu made fresh in front of you. The food was delicious and of course, the salad dressings were amazing. This is a great place to pick up some yummy olive oil and balsamic to take home with you. They offer free samples!   Pieous – Located closer to Austin on the edge of Dripping in Belterra Village. This is a pizza mecca. They have an Italian pizza certification (Vera Pizza Napoletana), and pastrami to die for. Oh and pastries too. STOP, now I’m hungry.    Torchy’s Tacos – In the same shopping center at Pieous, Torchy’s is an Austin institution. Grab some chips and queso and your choice of taco, and maybe even a beer.    Route 12 Filling Station – Located, you guessed it, on RR 12. This is kid-friendly and offers fast-casual service. American style food, with a few vegetarian options. I like the cauliflower tacos as a lighter choice. Splash pad and playground on-site!   Dinner The League Kitchen & Tavern – Located in Belterra Village. Mid-range prices and good food. Excellent happy hour Monday – Friday from 3:00 – 7:00 pm.  Garbo’s – Lobster rolls and delicious food right here in Central Texas. I visited on my birthday and option include both cold and warm lobster rolls, lobster mac ‘n cheese, crab cakes, fish and chips, salads, a variety of sides, and more. They even have an ice cream shop on-site. Open daily from 11:00 am – 9:00 pm, closed Monday.  Natkhat Flavors – Located close to Mercer Street in downtown Dripping, this Indian food restaurant is authentic and delicious. Verified by my friend from India. Check them out for lunch of dinner. Hours are 10:30 – 8:00 pm, closed Wednesday & Sunday.  Tillie’s – Located at a wedding venue called Camp Lucy, but the restaurant is open to the public. The interior was a former building from Vietnam that was taken down and re-built in this location. It is 100% Instagram worthy. Food is expensive but amazingly delicious with an excellent cocktail and wine list.  Dripping Springs Wineries, Breweries & Distilleries I hate to crush your spirits here (haha get it?), but it would be near impossible to hit all of these in just a short visit.  You might just need a second trip to explore all of the breweries and distilleries in this area. Drippings Springs is where I really discovered my love and appreciation of wine, more than a decade ago.  You don’t get a whole lot of wine options in Ohio where I’m originally from, just saying.  Below are my personal top 3 (ish) favorite wineries, breweries and distilleries in Dripping Springs, Texas.  Best Wineries in Dripping Springs Hawk’s Shadow – Located off McGregor Rd. Definitely off the beaten path, this winery is well worth that trek. The views are beautiful from their large covered patio, and the wine was a pleasant surprise. I liked almost everything I tasted. Only open on Saturdays, contact the winery to schedule an appointment on other days of the week.  Address: 7500 McGregor Ln, Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Solaro – Located off Fitzhugh Road. If you like Italian varietals this will be your spot. Grapes are grown in Texas, but the family who started the winery originates from Italy. They took their Italian wine-growing processes and style and applied it here. You can walk in for a tasting, but I would make an appointment on their website beforehand to ensure a spot.  Address: 13111 Silver Creek Rd, Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Bell Springs Winery – Located off Bell Springs Road. This one is technically a 2-for-1 deal. They are a winery, and as of recently also a brewery. One of the few kid-friendly wineries, with lots of outdoor space to roam. The first building on the property is the wine tasting room, and the second is now the tap room. We’ve spent many a day at Bell Springs as it’s just a mile from our home. 🙂  Address:  3700 Bell Springs Rd, Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Graveyard Winery: Adding this spot to the list because I really enjoy their wine. This is not a local vineyard, all of their grapes are grown and bottled in Paso Robles California. One of my favorite things about wine tasting is the variety you get to experience. Add Graveyard to your list and pretend like you are in Paso, while in Dripping! Moved to the same property at Bell Springs in 2025, so now it’s a 2-for-1 stop!  Address: 3700 Bell Springs Rd, Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Want to protect your data while you’re traveling or working from a coffee shop? I highly recommend Surfshark VPN, and have been using it now for years.  A VPN conceals your IP address so hackers cannot access any of your data. I use it in airports, at coffee shops, and even if I want to access a website I’m not sure about!  Click here to check it out!  Best Breweries in Dripping Springs Acopon – Located on Mercer Street, this cool little spot is a great place to stop for a drink while shopping and wandering. The owner loved the beer experience in the U.K. and decided to brew his beers using the same methods. Expect English style cask beers, along with some American styles as well.  Address: 211 W Mercer St, Dripping Springs, TX 78620 Suds Monkey Brewing – The owner and head brewmaster previously worked at Stone Brewing in San Diego. Beers range from IPA to Amber and Hefeweizen, with experimental seasonal beers. They offer events throughout the year, trivia every Wednesday, and a relaxed “hang out as long as you would like” atmosphere. Kid-friendly too!  Address: 12024 US-290, Austin, TX 78737  12 Fox Beer Co – New on the scene, as of summer 2019, this place is quickly growing in popularity. With a huge playground on site as well as food trucks, you can relax and stay awhile. They brew a few of their own beers including a Saison and Belgian Trippel and also have a few popular brews from Austin on tap.  Address:...

Dripping Springs Outdoors

The ideal time to visit Texas and enjoy the outdoors are Spring and Fall. With that said, that’s when everyone prefers to visit. You’ll want to weigh temperature and weather with the cost of lodging during different seasons to decide on when to visit. 

Winter: December – February.  Temperatures range from 30 – 60º Fahrenheit. This can really vary and could be worth the chance for the lower cost of lodging during this season. December is your best bet. You might even get to see some Christmas lights.

Where to Stay

Although Dripping has fewer accommodation options than further into wine country, you can find some hidden gems in this area. 

One of the best way to find an affordable and nice place to stay is Airbnb. Whether you are a solo traveler or a large family, you’ll be able to find a great place. 

I did a quick search on their site for a long weekend stay in April, and it gave me over 200 options in all different price ranges.

On our day trip around our own town, we stopped by this super cool spot, and they so graciously allowed us to wander the entire property and takes pictures. 

Located off Bell Springs Road and directly next to Bell Springs Winery, this is a great place to make your basecamp. In fact, that’s their tag line, “Your basecamp for adventure.” 

Here’s what they offer: 

  • Luxury cabins and yurts – I mean how fun and unique, am I right? 
  • Private Events and Weddings – There is a hill country view overlook on the property that would be an amazing wedding spot. Event center on the property as well.
  • Beautiful Pool – Complete with a bathhouse to change in right next door.
  • Troopy Tours – You can book their Toyota Land Cruiser Troop Carrier to visit wineries, breweries, restaurants or scenic spots.

Where to Eat in Dripping Springs

Texas Olive Oil Company

Let’s get to the good stuff here. I love to plan travel based around good food. 

Dripping is just starting to hit the radar in this area, and I’ll give you my top suggestions for every meal of the day.

Breakfast & Coffee
  • Rolling in Thyme and Dough  – Located off 290 just west of downtown. This is the local go-to for fresh breakfast and pastries. They use fresh, local organic ingredients. Not open Sundays. 
  • Crepe Crazy – Also located on 290 west of downtown. All crepes all the time, they do offer some other items as well like sandwiches salads and soups. This place is really tasty, and they support the deaf community. All of the staff who work here are deaf. 
  • Flores Breakfast Taco Shack – Located at the corner of Mighty Tiger and 290. There is usually a line, so come prepared. Run by the owners of Flores Mexican Restaurant. Not open Sundays. 
  • Mazama Coffee – Located on Mercer Street. Our local coffee shop. Good coffee and small snacks if you are feeling like a light breakfast.
Lunch

  • Bistro at Texas Hill Country Olive Company – Located on Fitzhugh Road, right at Bell Springs Rd. A small menu made fresh in front of you. The food was delicious and of course, the salad dressings were amazing. This is a great place to pick up some yummy olive oil and balsamic to take home with you. They offer free samples!  
  • Pieous – Located closer to Austin on the edge of Dripping in Belterra Village. This is a pizza mecca. They have an Italian pizza certification (Vera Pizza Napoletana), and pastrami to die for. Oh and pastries too. STOP, now I’m hungry. 
 
  • Torchy’s Tacos – In the same shopping center at Pieous, Torchy’s is an Austin institution. Grab some chips and queso and your choice of taco, and maybe even a beer. 
 
  • Route 12 Filling Station – Located, you guessed it, on RR 12. This is kid-friendly and offers fast-casual service. American style food, with a few vegetarian options. I like the cauliflower tacos as a lighter choice. Splash pad and playground on-site!  
Dinner
  • The League Kitchen & Tavern – Located in Belterra Village. Mid-range prices and good food. Excellent happy hour Monday – Friday from 3:00 – 7:00 pm. 
  • Garbo’s – Lobster rolls and delicious food right here in Central Texas. I visited on my birthday and option include both cold and warm lobster rolls, lobster mac ‘n cheese, crab cakes, fish and chips, salads, a variety of sides, and more. They even have an ice cream shop on-site. Open daily from 11:00 am – 9:00 pm, closed Monday. 
  • Natkhat Flavors – Located close to Mercer Street in downtown Dripping, this Indian food restaurant is authentic and delicious. Verified by my friend from India. Check them out for lunch of dinner. Hours are 10:30 – 8:00 pm, closed Wednesday & Sunday. 
  • Tillie’s – Located at a wedding venue called Camp Lucy, but the restaurant is open to the public. The interior was a former building from Vietnam that was taken down and re-built in this location. It is 100% Instagram worthy. Food is expensive but amazingly delicious with an excellent cocktail and wine list.

I hate to crush your spirits here (haha get it?), but it would be near impossible to hit all of these in just a short visit. 

You might just need a second trip to explore all of the breweries and distilleries in this area. Drippings Springs is where I really discovered my love and appreciation of wine, more than a decade ago. 

You don’t get a whole lot of wine options in Ohio where I’m originally from, just saying. 

Below are my personal top 3 (ish) favorite wineries, breweries and distilleries in Dripping Springs, Texas. 

Best Wineries in Dripping Springs
  • Hawk’s Shadow – Located off McGregor Rd. Definitely off the beaten path, this winery is well worth that trek. The views are beautiful from their large covered patio, and the wine was a pleasant surprise. I liked almost everything I tasted. Only open on Saturdays, contact the winery to schedule an appointment on other days of the week.

  • Solaro – Located off Fitzhugh Road. If you like Italian varietals this will be your spot. Grapes are grown in Texas, but the family who started the winery originates from Italy. They took their Italian wine-growing processes and style and applied it here. You can walk in for a tasting, but I would make an appointment on their website beforehand to ensure a spot.

  • Bell Springs Winery – Located off Bell Springs Road. This one is technically a 2-for-1 deal. They are a winery, and as of recently also a brewery. One of the few kid-friendly wineries, with lots of outdoor space to roam. The first building on the property is the wine tasting room, and the second is now the tap room. We’ve spent many a day at Bell Springs as it’s just a mile from our home. 🙂

Graveyard Winery: Adding this spot to the list because I really enjoy their wine. This is not a local vineyard, all of their grapes are grown and bottled in Paso Robles California. One of my favorite things about wine tasting is the variety you get to experience. Add Graveyard to your list and pretend like you are in Paso, while in Dripping! Moved to the same property at Bell Springs in 2025, so now it’s a 2-for-1 stop!

Acopon Brewing, Dripping Springs Breweries, Plan to Explore
  • Acopon – Located on Mercer Street, this cool little spot is a great place to stop for a drink while shopping and wandering. The owner loved the beer experience in the U.K. and decided to brew his beers using the same methods. Expect English style cask beers, along with some American styles as well.

  • Suds Monkey Brewing – The owner and head brewmaster previously worked at Stone Brewing in San Diego. Beers range from IPA to Amber and Hefeweizen, with experimental seasonal beers. They offer events throughout the year, trivia every Wednesday, and a relaxed “hang out as long as you would like” atmosphere. Kid-friendly too!

  • 12 Fox Beer Co – New on the scene, as of summer 2019, this place is quickly growing in popularity. With a huge playground on site as well as food trucks, you can relax and stay awhile. They brew a few of their own beers including a Saison and Belgian Trippel and also have a few popular brews from Austin on tap.

If you are looking for a proper brewery tour, you won’t find it at the above breweries. So for my honorable mention, I would head over to Vista Brewing to get the full experience. Technically in Driftwood, not Dripping, their tasting room is a little bit more upscale with an onsite kitchen. Large playscape for kids towards the rear of the property is a plus!

Best Distilleries in Dripping Springs

  • Treaty Oak –  One of our favorite places. Their specialty is bourbon whiskey here. You can do a tasting, take a tour, or enjoy a cocktail on-site. Also available are beer and wine for those who may not partake in spirits. With a restaurant on site and a huge property to roam this is a gathering spot that many people love. Kid-friendly as well.

  • Deep Eddy Vodka –  With an expansive tasting room and a fun outdoor area, if you like vodka cocktails this is a great stop. Typically a food truck will be on-site on the weekend. Not kid-friendly.

  • Dripping Springs Distilling – Formerly just a production facility with a small tasting area, they recently built a building called Distiller’s Hall. Here you can take a tour, sample different liquors (including Bourbon, Gin, and Vodka), or have a craft cocktail. There is also food on-site.

  • Live Music – Check out the schedule at Hudson’s on Mercer to see who’s playing live. Around the corner on Old Fitzhugh you can find live music Friday at Saturday nights at Dog ‘n’ Bone. 
  • Feed Store – Wander into the feed store to see an untouched historic building [NOW CLOSED but you can still view the exterior, hoping they preserve the building]
  • Special Events – Founder’s Day in the Spring (a 3 day celebration that is all things BBQ), and Christmas on Mercer in December. 

Dripping Springs Outdoor Activities

Hamilton Pool – Pictured, this swimming hole is truly beautiful. Located close to Dripping Springs off Hamilton Pool Road, this popular swimming spot is a great place to cool down during the summer month. In the off-season you can still visit to hike the grounds and enjoy. 

Note: You will need to hike down to the hole a bit, so bring a decent pair of shoes. Reservations need to be made year around. Cost is $15 a car, or $5 a car if someone is over 62. You will need to make a reservation for your car in advance, and then pay a per person fee once you arrive. They only accept cash in-person.

Pedernales Falls State Park – Close to both Dripping Springs and Johnson City, this park offers a lot to do and see. There are hiking trails that are both easy or advanced, as well as mountain biking trails. You can hike to see a waterfall, or swim at other locations along the river.  There are primitive camping sites, as well as sites that offer water and electricity. 

Note: There is an entrance fee of $6 for adults, children 12 & under are free. Campsites range from $10 – $20 a night plus the daily entrance fee. Please read the safety guidelines on the park website before arriving. 

RV Camping: We recently spent a night in a RV rental here! It’s an amazing spot to camp overnight with plenty of space between sites. Cost per night for electric and water was $20, on top of per person park entry fee (total of $32). We would absolutely camp here again!

I live here and have been to able to explore a good number of great places to eat, drink, and stay.  Just 30 – 90 minutes from Austin, depending if you are starting in Dripping or Fredericksburg, you could combine this trip with the city. San Antonio is also just over an hour away.  There’s a little bit of everything at this destination including wineries, breweries, rolling vistas, shopping and even hiking. So strap on your hiking boots, or bring your travel wine glass and plan your next trip to the Texas Hill Country with the tips below! How to Get There By Plane – If you are traveling from out of state, Austin Bergstrom International Airport is your best bet. You could also fly into San Antonio as an option. You will need a car to get anywhere.  Driving – If you are coming from somewhere in Texas, you’ll want to make your way to 290, the highway that flows through the majority of the things to do and see.  Seasons and Weather The ideal time to visit Texas and enjoy the outdoors are Spring and Fall. With that said, that’s when everyone wants to visit. You’ll want to weigh temperature and weather with the cost of lodging during different seasons to decide on when to visit.  I’ll outline the seasons with pros and cons below.  Winter: December – February.  Temperatures range from 30-60 degrees Fahrenheit. This can really vary, and could be worth the chance for the lower cost of lodging during this season. December is your best bet. You might even get to see some Christmas lights. (Johnson City has the best display)  Spring: March – April. Temps range from 60 – 80 degrees. This time of year is ideal, but expect higher prices and bigger crowds. Both months are equally great in my opinion. You might catch the wildflowers blooming, including bluebonnets, during this season! Summer: May – September. It gets hot in Texas, really hot. Temperatures range from 80 – 100+ degrees. If you want to travel here during this time, I would suggest either May when it’s still closer to the 80 degree range, and maybe September, but it still tends to be pretty hot then. On the plus side, the crowds will be thinner.  Fall: October – November. Temps range from 50 – 80 degrees, with averages in the 70’s. This time of year is also ideal, but can be busy just like Spring. Fredericksburg, Johnson City or Wimberley could be great places to grab unique Holiday gifts.  If you want to book during the ideal seasons of Spring or Fall, plan to book accommodations in advance to insure a spot.  Read More: How to Plan an Amazing Vacation Itinerary Anywhere Where to Stay There are a few areas you can stay in the Hill Country, depending what you are looking for. The largest amount of options are out closer to Fredericksburg, with Dripping Springs coming in second.  I’ll outline a few options below and which attractions they are closest to. Fredericksburg – In town, close to the majority of wineries, restaurants and shopping. If you are looking to be walking distance to cute shops as well as tasting rooms in town, (these are off shoots of some of the bigger wineries close by) staying close to Main Street in Fredericksburg is ideal. There are shuttles here that you can book to take you to the wineries, and sometimes even German events like Oktoberfest.  Fredericksburg – Outside of town, close to nature and wineries. If you want views and peacefulness, staying in a cottage or rental outside of town will be perfect. Here you will be really close to the wineries, but would need to drive into town for supplies or better food choices. Dripping Springs – Close to breweries, distilleries and wineries. The Dripping area has a lower volume of wineries, but it offers a lot more options if wine isn’t your thing. Most places to stay will not be walking distance to any shops, so it will have a more country or neighborhood vibe. This area is the closest to Austin, so if you wanted to do a bit of exploring there as well, it’s about a 30 minute drive vs over an hour From Fredericksburg.  Wimberley – Close to shopping and a few restaurants. Wimberley is a small little town with lots of cute shops and a few restaurants. This is further away from most things other than shopping, but it really is a quaint place with charm. There are just a few wineries close by.  How to find Accommodations – Now, how to actually find a place to stay. There are not many full service hotels in this area, so renting a cottage or Airbnb is the way to go. The local vacation rental site for Fredericksburg is called Gasthaus Schmidt. This site has many small houses and cottages for rent in the area.  I would recommend booking far out in advance for high season, as the cutest places go first. Also, most places in Fredericksburg require a 2 night minimum stay.   Wine, Wine & More Wine The Texas wine trail has over 50 wineries. Yes I said 50, can you believe it?  I wish it was possible to see them all in one trip, but that is a pretty tall order.  I think Texas has some great things going on with wine, and it’s worthy of a full trip in and of itself.  If you have limited time and want to narrow down the choices, I would follow the tips below!  Decide what kind of wine experience you want – Do you like bigger, well known wineries, or smaller up and coming ones? Wineries that use only Texas grapes, or ones that outsource some grapes? The Hill Country has the whole spectrum, so this could help narrow down your choices.  Focus on a specific area – The are a few main wine areas in the Hill Country for wine. Fredericksburg and Stonewall have the highest number and most well known wineries. As you head East, Hye and Johnson City also have some good options, Further East and South, and closer to Austin, you have Dripping Springs and Driftwood.  Winery Atmosphere – Do you like a view, a more intimate experience, or somewhere that has a band playing or an event? Especially during high season, you’ll find a lot going on especially at the more well know wineries like Becker, Grape Creek, and 4.0 Cellars.   Recommendations: Below are a few of my personal favorite wineries in each area. Drippings Springs/Wimberley – Hawk’s Shadow, Bell Springs, Wimberley Valley, Graveyard VineyardsJohnson City/Hye – AB Astris, Lewis Wines, Texas Hills, Crowson  Frederickburg/Stonewall – 4.0 Cellars, Signor, Becker, Lost Draw. Tasting Rooms on Main Street: Perspective Cellars (they offer a comparison of Texas varietals to wines around the world) & Becker (in the old Buick Dealership).  There are new wineries popping up all the time, so this list will be ever changing!  Read More: 5 Reasons Why You Need to Try Hungarian Wine Breweries & Distilleries You might just need a second trip to explore all of the Breweries and Distilleries in this area.  While most of the wineries are centered around Fredericksburg, the majority of the breweries are in Dripping Springs. Whatever style of beer you like, I bet you’ll find it at a Texas Brewery.  Here are my tips on how to narrow it down.  First things first, liquor or beer (or maybe both) –  There are definitely more breweries than distilleries, and most of the distilleries are more like tasting rooms. I would take 2+ days to try to tackle both.   Brewery or Distillery hop, or spend all day in one location  – The cool thing about being out of the city, is that these locations are built to hang out at all day. Many have food on site, playgrounds, live music, and more.  Narrow down by beer or liquor type – Select based on your preferences. Most places have a somewhat varied selection, but focus heavier on a particular beer style or liquor. Do you like IPA, or Lagers, or German/Belgian beers? Do you like Whiskey, or Vodka, or Gin?  Recommendations: Below are a few of my personal favorite breweries or distilleries in each area. Dripping Springs/Johnson City: Jester King, Suds Monkey, Vista Brewing, Treaty Oak, Family Business Beer Co., Reck ‘Em Right BrewingBlanco: Real Ale Brewing and DistilleryFredericksburg/Hye: Altstadt, Garrison Brothers   Outdoor Activities Texas offers pretty great outdoor experiences all over the state. In the Hill Country, I’ll outline 3 that I think are great choices depending on what you are looking for.  Hamilton Pool – Pictured above, this swimming hole is beautiful. Located close to Dripping Springs, and not too far from Austin. If you want to swim here during the hotter months, you will need to make a reservation in advance. We do both well and if you’ve never had either, I do think they are worth trying.  Texas, especially Austin, has such a good food scene for almost any genre. Think outside the BBQ box and give some other foods a try here. Dripping Springs Restaurants & Cafes Pieous  – Amazing pizza and pistrami as well as pastries.  Mazama – Great local coffee shop on historic Mercer Street.  Rolling in Thyme and Dough – Breakfast spot with fresh made food. Lots of pastry and dessert options too. Not open on Sundays.  Tillie’s – for an upscale experience, Tillie’s has delicious food and drinks.  Boil Shack – Just outside Dripping in Henly, known for their crawfish boil.  Fredericksburg Restaurants & Cafes The Peach Tree – Great spot for breakfast or brunch, with some healthy options.  Old German Bakery – yummy pastries for a quick breakfast.  Vaudeville – Upscale bistro dining on Main Street. DELICIOUS!  Stout’s Trattoria at Grape Creek – Good option for food while on your wine tour. This place has great, although expensive, food.  Hye Market – for a quick lunch between stops, they offer sandwiches, salads and more.  I don’t know about you, but now I want to explore the Hill Country even more!  It’s truly growing quickly, and there are so many wineries I have never even been to (and I’ve been to a lot). Where to Stay

Airbnb Bedroom

There are a few areas you can stay in the Hill Country, depending what you are looking for. The largest amount of options are out closer to Fredericksburg, with Dripping Springs coming in second. 

I’ll outline a few options below and which attractions they are closest to.

Fredericksburg – In town, close to the majority of wineries, restaurants and shopping. If you are looking to be walking distance to cute shops as well as tasting rooms in town, (these are off shoots of some of the bigger wineries close by) staying close to Main Street in Fredericksburg is ideal. There are shuttles here that you can book to take you to the wineries, and sometimes even German events like Oktoberfest. 

Fredericksburg – Outside of town, close to nature and wineries. If you want views and peacefulness, staying in a cottage or rental outside of town will be perfect. Here you will be really close to the wineries, but would need to drive into town for supplies or better food choices.

Dripping Springs – Close to breweries, distilleries and wineries. The Dripping area has a lower volume of wineries, but it offers a lot more options if wine isn’t your thing. Most places to stay will not be walking distance to any shops, so it will have a more country or neighborhood vibe. This area is the closest to Austin, so if you wanted to do a bit of exploring there as well, it’s about a 30 minute drive vs over an hour From Fredericksburg. 

Wimberley – Close to shopping and a few restaurants. Wimberley is a small little town with lots of cute shops and a few restaurants. This is further away from most things other than shopping, but it really is a quaint place with charm. There are just a few wineries close by. 

How to find Accommodations – Now, how to actually find a place to stay. There are not many full service hotels in this area, so renting a cottage or Airbnb is the way to go. The local vacation rental site for Fredericksburg is called Gasthaus Schmidt. This site has many small houses and cottages for rent in the area. 

I would recommend booking far out in advance for high season, as the cutest places go first. Also, most places in Fredericksburg require a 2 night minimum stay.  

Wine, Wine & More Wine

The Texas wine trail has over 50 wineries. Yes I said 50, can you believe it? 

I wish it was possible to see them all in one trip, but that is a pretty tall order.  I think Texas has some great things going on with wine, and it’s worthy of a full trip in and of itself. 

If you have limited time and want to narrow down the choices, I would follow the tips below! 

  • Decide what kind of wine experience you want – Do you like bigger, well known wineries, or smaller up and coming ones? Wineries that use only Texas grapes, or ones that outsource some grapes? The Hill Country has the whole spectrum, so this could help narrow down your choices. 
  • Focus on a specific area – The are a few main wine areas in the Hill Country for wine. Fredericksburg and Stonewall have the highest number and most well known wineries. As you head East, Hye and Johnson City also have some good options, Further East and South, and closer to Austin, you have Dripping Springs and Driftwood. 
  • Winery Atmosphere – Do you like a view, a more intimate experience, or somewhere that has a band playing or an event? Especially during high season, you’ll find a lot going on especially at the more well know wineries like Becker, Grape Creek, and 4.0 Cellars.  

Recommendations: Below are a few of my personal favorite wineries in each area. 
Drippings Springs/Wimberley – Hawk’s Shadow, Bell Springs, Wimberley Valley, Graveyard Vineyards
Johnson City/Hye – AB Astris, Lewis Wines, Texas Hills, Crowson  
Frederickburg/Stonewall – 4.0 Cellars, Signor, Becker, Lost Draw.

Tasting Rooms on Main Street: Perspective Cellars (they offer a comparison of Texas varietals to wines around the world) & Becker (in the old Buick Dealership). 

There are new wineries popping up all the time, so this list will be ever changing!

Breweries & Distilleries

Craft Beer

You might just need a second trip to explore all of the Breweries and Distilleries in this area. 

While most of the wineries are centered around Fredericksburg, the majority of the breweries are in Dripping Springs. Whatever style of beer you like, I bet you’ll find it at a Texas Brewery. 

Here are my tips on how to narrow it down. 

  • First things first, liquor or beer (or maybe both) –  There are definitely more breweries than distilleries, and most of the distilleries are more like tasting rooms. I would take 2+ days to try to tackle both.  
  • Brewery or Distillery hop, or spend all day in one location  – The cool thing about being out of the city, is that these locations are built to hang out at all day. Many have food on site, playgrounds, live music, and more. 
  • Narrow down by beer or liquor type – Select based on your preferences. Most places have a somewhat varied selection, but focus heavier on a particular beer style or liquor. Do you like IPA, or Lagers, or German/Belgian beers? Do you like Whiskey, or Vodka, or Gin? 
Recommendations: Below are a few of my personal favorite breweries or distilleries in each area. 
Dripping Springs/Johnson City: Jester King, Suds Monkey, Vista Brewing, Treaty Oak, Family Business Beer Co., Reck ‘Em Right Brewing
Blanco: Real Ale Brewing and Distillery
Fredericksburg/Hye: Altstadt, Garrison Brothers 
 

Outdoor Activities

Texas offers pretty great outdoor experiences all over the state. In the Hill Country, I’ll outline 3 that I think are great choices depending on what you are looking for. 

Hamilton Pool – Pictured above, this swimming hole is beautiful. Located close to Dripping Springs, and not too far from Austin. If you want to swim here during the hotter months, you will need to make a reservation in advance. In the off-season you can hike around the grounds and do not need a reservation to do so. 

Note: You will need to hike down to the hole a bit, so bring a decent pair of shoes. Reservations need to be made March – October. Cost is $15 a car, or $5 a car if someone is over 62. 

Enchanted Rock – This popular hiking spot is located outside of Fredericksburg. It offers close to 11 miles of hiking trails to explore. If camping is your thing, you can do that here as well. 

Note: There is an entrance fee of $7 for adults, children 12 & under are free. Also, this place can get busy, so I recommend getting there early to ensure you will be admitted. 

Pedernales Falls State Park – Close to both Dripping Springs and Johnson City, this park offers a lot to do and see. There are hiking trails that are both easy or advanced, as well as mountain biking trails. You can hike to see a waterfall, or swim at other locations along the river.  There are primitive camping sites, as well as sites that offer water and electricity. 

Note: There is an entrance fee of $6 for adults, children 12 & under are free. Campsites range from $10 – $20 a night plus the daily entrance fee. Please read the safety guidelines on the park website before arriving, 

What to Eat

The first foods people think of when they come to visit Texas are BBQ and Tex Mex. We do both well and if you’ve never had either, I do think they are worth trying. 

Texas, especially Austin, has such a good food scene for almost any genre. Think outside the BBQ box and give some other foods a try here.

Dripping Springs Restaurants & Cafes

Pieous  – Amazing pizza and pistrami as well as pastries. 

Mazama – Great local coffee shop on historic Mercer Street. 

Rolling in Thyme and Dough – Breakfast spot with fresh made food. Lots of pastry and dessert options too. Not open on Sundays. 

Tillie’s – for an upscale experience, Tillie’s has delicious food and drinks. 

Boil Shack – Just outside Dripping in Henly, known for their crawfish boil. 

Fredericksburg Restaurants & Cafes

The Peach Tree – Great spot for breakfast or brunch, with some healthy options. 

Old German Bakery – yummy pastries for a quick breakfast. 

Vaudeville – Upscale bistro dining on Main Street. DELICIOUS! 

Stout’s Trattoria at Grape Creek – Good option for food while on your wine tour. This place has great, although expensive, food. 

Hye Market – for a quick lunch between stops, they offer sandwiches, salads and more. 

I don’t know about you, but now I want to explore the Hill Country even more! 

It’s truly growing quickly, and there are so many wineries I have never even been to (and I’ve been to a lot). Let me know if you plan a trip to the Texas Hill Country and discover a location you love that’s not on my list.
